Maree Gleeson

Professor Gleeson is a world-leading immunologist who has held executive leadership positions in health services, government and medical research. She was Director of the Hunter Medical Research Institute from 2006 until 2011, a joint venture between the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Health during a period of significant growth in research funding, researchers and capital funding for construction of the $90 HMRI building.

Prior to this role, Professor Gleeson was the Inaugural Director of Medical Research in the NSW Ministry for Science & Medical Research from 2004 until 2006, responsible for development and funding of medical research across NSW. Professor Gleeson has over 30 years’ experience in the health sector in diagnostic pathology, including as the Director of Immunology for the Hunter Area Pathology Service. Professor Gleeson is now a professional company director and is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Professor Gleeson served on the Hunter Research Foundation Board from 2012 to 2016
